After lunch, Graham reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for his first day of assignments there. He had called ahead and let them know that he would be in late after taking care of some administrative things with his former supervisor, Lieutenant Baker. With the day he had been having, he would not at all been surprised if Special Agent Deaton and Youngman were already aware of his interview with William Dunbar in Michigan. Graham almost wished that they did know. At least then, he could share with them what he found out. Otherwise, Graham would have to keep it to himself and continued to operate covertly.
Upon Grahamâs arrival at the FBI office, he met with the agents and civilian assistants who were working on the terrorist bombings that took place all over the nation on the Fourth of July. Graham sat quietly but squirmed as the bureau put up biography after biography of known terrorist leaders that could have been responsible for these attacks. Any of these terrorists could have been foot soldiers in this battle to find the ones responsible for these attacks, but Graham already knew who the leader was. Or at least Graham knew Dr. Omar Mata was one of the people higher up in the chain of command.
Graham was starting to believe that Dr. Omar Mata was the American connection for a large terrorist group operating in the United States. Omar Mata may not be the one planning these attacks or funding them, but Graham suspected that he was the American liaison between the people funding and planning the attacks and the martyrs who carried them out. Graham sat there and wondered how he had come to such a conclusion. He did not even have any evidence that Omar Mata was involved with anything at all. Graham was so involved in his thought process that he did not realize that he had been called on several times by the leader of the meeting.
âGraham? Are you still with us? Or are you daydreaming about your new fiancée?â asked Special Agent Deaton, the facilitator of the meeting, to a roar of laughter. âYou are the only one in the room who has had his engagement announced via press conference from the Memphis Zoo. Where will your reception be? Is the circus coming to town?â
Out of everyone in the room, Graham was the most used to law enforcement humor and jealousy. He sat there staring at Special Agent Deaton for quite a while before answering. âYes, sir, I am very much with you.â A slightly sarcastic tone could be noticed in Graham. As he paused to gather his thoughts, several of the seasoned FBI veterans snickered at who they considered to be an outsider. âBut I feel like we should continue to look at internal risks as well.â
âWhat do you mean?â said Agent Deaton sarcastically, knowing fully well what Graham had on his mind.
âWell, I think that we should look at leaders of terrorist organizations who blend in like the rest of us.
